Era pemerintahan Sultan Sir Abu Bakar menyaksikan status negeri Johor sebagai sebuah negeri membangun pesat meningkat drastik. Pelayaran pertama ke England seawal tahun 1866 menjadi Raja Melayu pertama diterima sebagai tetamu diraja Ratu Victoria mencetus perubahan besar landskap negeri Johor.
Dokumentasi persetiaan Johor dan British telah memperkasakan kedaulatan negeri Johor malah Institusi Kesultanan Johor Moden diiktiraf secara profesional. Jeneral Gabenor British di India mempersilakan Sultan Sir Abu Bakar agar turut serta dalam istiadat rasmi keberangkatan lawatan Putera Albert (Prince of Wales) putera sulung Ratu Victoria ke India pada tahun 1875.
Kesudian baginda dalam perarakan diraja itu disambut gembira oleh Putera Albert dan mendapat penghormatan dari Kerabat DiRaja India atas hubungan baik di antara Institusi DiRaja England dan Johor.
Dalam majlis santapan rasmi bersama Putera dan dif-dif berpengaruh, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar diraikan dalam penyerahan rasmi darjah kebesaran Knight Commander of The Star of India (KCSI) dari Ratu Victoria yang diterima baginda pada tahun 1866.
Selain menjadi Raja Melayu pertama menerima anugerah seumpama itu dari kuasa besar dunia, baginda menerima medal emas ‘Bertie’s Medal’ dan cincin berlian sebagai tanda persahabatan dari Putera Albert. Allah Peliharakan Sultan.

During Sultan Sir Abu Bakar's reign, Johor's status as a developing state improved drastically. The first trip to England in 1866, becoming the first Malay ruler to be welcomed as Queen Victoria's royal guest, led to big changes to Johor's landscape.
The documented close ties between Johor and the British strengthened Johor's sovereignty and saw the Modern Johor Sultanate Institution being acknowledged professionally. The British Governor-General of India invited Sultan Sir Abu Bakar to take part in an official welcoming ceremony to India for Prince Albert, Prince of Wales and the eldest prince of Queen Victoria, in 1875.
His Majesty's participation in the royal parade was well received by Prince Albert and honoured by the Indian Royal Family in light of the good relationship between the royal institutions of England and Johor.
During an official dinner function with the Prince and influential guests, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar was honoured with the Knight Commander of The Star of India (KCSI) order from Queen Victoria in 1866.
Besides becoming the first Malay ruler to receive such an honour from a world power, His Majesty received a Bertie's Medal and a diamond ring as tokens of friendship from Prince Albert. Allah Peliharakan Sultan.
