Perwatakan kepimpinan yang tegas dan sikap berpandangan jauh serta berwawasan Kesultanan Johor pada hari ini diwarisi dari kepimpinan Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim dan amat disegani oleh Kerajaan British. Lonjakan kemajuan negeri telah membuka mata negara asing terhadap keupayaan Johor.
Keberangkatan Sultan Sir Abu Bakar dan Sultan Sir Ibrahim ke segenap pelusuk negara-negara maju di benua Eropah sejak kurun ke-19 adalah demi hubungan dua hala dan diplomatik untuk negeri Johor.
Ia membawa pulangan yang baik pelbagai sudut serta masa hadapan yang baik untuk negeri Johor dan diteruskan sehingga kini oleh pewaris takhta. Sejak negeri Johor dikenali di peringkat antarabangsa, ramai kerabat-kerabat diraja dari pelbagai negara maju mula melawat Johor.
Pada tahun 1869, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar menerima mengadap putera Queen Victoria, Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh di Istana Besar. Tiga tahun kemudiannya, Istana Johor menerima kunjungan kerabat diraja Rusia, Grand Duke Alexis, manakala Prince Henry dari Kingdom of Prussia (kini Jerman) pada tahun 1898 dan King David, Raja Pemerintah Kepulauan Hawaii pada tahun 1881.
Kunjungan kerabat-kerabat DiRaja serta kenamaan asing diraikan dengan penuh istiadat, penghormatan dan susunan acara lawatan sekitar Johor Bahru. Kunjungan dari pelbagai negara berterusan pada zaman Sultan Sir Ibrahim dan waris baginda seterusnya yang memberi indikasi bahawa negeri Johor berada di tahap kelas yang tersendiri.
