Kegemilangan Empayar Kesultanan Johor sejak penubuhannya di awal kurun ke-16 telah
membawa kedatangan para pedagang dari serata dunia dan menjadi tumpuan utama persinggahan mereka ke wilayah-wilayah dibawah naungan Kerajaan Johor. Selain keadaan perairan yang terlindung dari ribut kencang, kedudukan geografinya juga amat strategik. Tidak hairan ia menjadi rebutan pihak asing pada masa itu.
Pertengahan kurun ke-19 pula menyaksikan berlaku satu transformasi besar dalam politik dan ekonomi negeri Johor. Selain cabaran politik yang rumit, Johor masih kekal dibawah pemerintahan Kesultanan Melayu dari susur galur yang sama di bawah pentadbiran Kesultanan Johor Moden. Di bawah kepimpinan pemerintahan baru berserta para pembesar kerajaan yang amat komited, kemajuan negeri telah berjaya dicapai.
Kesultanan Johor Moden adalah model Kerajaan Beraja pertama di Asia atau mungkin di Dunia yang mana Rajanya bersama-sama para pembesar berkhidmat untuk rakyat dan negeri. Semangat bekerjasama di antara Istana dan Kerajaan seperti sebuah keluarga besar menjadi detik perubahan besar kepada sistem kestabilan politik dan loncatan unjuran ekonomi bagi negeri Johor. The glory of the Johor Sultanate Empire since its founding in the early 16th century attracted many traders from around the world and became a main focus of their travels to territories under the Johor Government. Besides the waterway having a natural shelter from thunderstorms, its geographical location was also very strategic. It was no surprise that it was highly desired by foreign powers at that time.
The mid-19th century saw a huge transformation to Johor's politics and economy. Besides complicated politics, Johor remained under the reign of the Malay Sultanate following the rise of the Modern Johor Sultanate. Under the new leadership with highly committed officials, the state achieved tremendous progress.
The Modern Johor Sultanate was the first monarchy in Asia and perhaps in the world in which the ruler and officials served the people and state. The teamwork spirit between the Palace and the Government akin to a big family was a huge turning point in the political stability system and economic advancement for Johor.
