Langkah proaktif yang pertama dikalangan Raja Melayu telah dilaksanakan sejak zaman Sultan Sir Abu Bakar lagi. Baginda telah berangkat ke England, Italy, Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria dan Hawaii untuk bertemu dengan Raja dan Pemerintah negara tersebut.
Pada tahun 1893, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar bertemu Sultan Abdul Hamid II, Pemerintah Kerajaan Islam Khalifiah Uthmaniyyah dan ke Mesir serta membawa pulang model hukum fiqh dan perundangan Islam serta pengiktirafan darjah kebesaran Osmaniah. Pada tahun 1883 pula baginda ke Hong Kong, China dan Jepun.
Nama Johor turut dikenali secara meluas, tambahan lagi Johor terlibat dalam pameran ekspo dunia pertama kalinya di UK pada tahun 1862 dan di Australia Adelaide Jubiless Exhibition pada tahun 1887. Johor menyertai World Exposition di Chicago Amerika Syarikat pada tahun 1893 dan 1933 serta di San Fransisco tahun 1939.
Sultan Sir Ibrahim ketika itu turut berangkat bersama-sama Menteri Besar Johor ketika itu iaitu Dato’ Onn Jaafar di pameran tersebut. Usaha mengharumkan nama negeri Johor seperti ini diteruskan oleh waris Kesultanan Johor Moden DYAM Mejar Jeneral Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim dalam pelbagai lapangan seperti sukan dan ketenteraan. The first proactive steps among Malay rulers had been carried out since the Sultan Sir Abu Bakar era. His Majesty travelled to England, Italy, Switzerland, France, Italy, Austria and Hawaii to meet kings and rulers of those countries.
In 1893, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar met Sultan Abdul Hamid II, ruler of the Ottoman Empire, and travelled to Egypt and brought home the fiqh jurisprudence model and Islamic legislation as well as the Order of Osmanieh recognition. In 1883, His Majesty travelled to Hong Kong, China and Japan.
Johor's name was slowly getting more well known, especially after Johor was involved with worlds expos' for the first time in the UK in 1862 and at the Australia Adelaide Jubiless Exhibition in 1887. Johor also took part at the World Exposition in Chicago, the United States of America, in 1893 and 1933 as well as in San Francisco in 1939.
Sultan Sir Ibrahim at that time travelled with Dato' Onn Jaafar, Menteri Besar of Johor, for those exhibitions. The efforts to promote Johor in such ways have been continued by Modern Johor Sultanate heir HRH Major General Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim in various fields such as sports and military.
