Muscle cramps is a common injury picked up by footballers. It happens when muscles are not working in sync with each other. The affected muscle can lead to a muscle tear if it happens too strong and fast. There are 8 FACTORS that can cause muscle cramps. [1/9]

Factor 1 - High intensity matches.

It often happens during a final or an important match for a team, when players have to play or run faster than usual.

Factor 2 - Muscles not fully warmed up.

Lack of stretching and massage before playing can cause cramps. The muscles have yet to reach the optimal temperature and elasticity.

Factor 3 - Weather conditions.

Weather that is too hot and lacking wind will cause the body to sweat consistently. Sweat will release sodium and electrolytes that are important for muscles in the body and the lack of sodium becomes one of the causes of cramps.

Factor 4 - Not enough water in the body.

Drinks containing sodium and potassium should be made available by the pitch at all times. Drink at least every 20 minutes during a game.

Factor 5 - Lack of sleep before a match.
Sleep allows the cells in the body that have been used throughout the day during exercise to rest. Muscle cells that get inadequate rest can be easily injured.

Factor 6 - Wearing overly tight socks.
Foot muscles need good blood circulation. When you wear a pair of socks or bandages tightly, it will block blood circulation to the muscles. The muscles will get less oxygen and cramps will occur.

Factor 7 - Caffeine intake.
Coffee that contains caffeine will cause a person to urinate frequently. Avoid drinking coffee on the day of the match because if the body does not get replenished with water, it can contribute to dehydration and subsequently muscle cramps.

Factor 8 - Past injuries
Past injuries especially those affecting torn muscles can cause cramps. Get adequate treatment if you have torn muscles.
