Setiap kali sambutan ulangtahun hari keputeraan Sultan Johor, pelbagai acara sukan diadakan dan sambutan yang diterima saripada rakyat amat meriah sekali. Pada waktu seperti itu, ia merupakan peluang rakyat dari pelbagai kaum, kawasan dan daerah untuk saling bertemu dan menikmati acara sukan yang dipertandingkan. Antara yang mendapat tontonan ramai adalah acara sukan air.
Pertandingan sukan air sudah dimulakan di sekitar pantai Lido sejak akhir kurun ke-19 lagi iaitu sekitar tahun 1897, ketika pemerintahan Sultan Sir Ibrahim. Pelbagai kategori perlumbaan seperti lumba Koleh (perahu), bot berenjin laju dan perahu layar diadakan dan mendapat penyertaan dari peserta tempatan dan Singapura. Ramai rakyat Johor dari pelbagai daerah datang ke Johor Bahru termasuk dari Singapura yang menaiki bot penumpang khas untuk menyaksikan acara terbabit.
Acara seperti itu juga diadakan ketika zaman Sultan Sir Ismail, Sultan Iskandar hingga ke DYMM Sultan Ibrahim, Sultan Johor sekarang. Sultan Iskandar dan DYMM Sultan Ibrahim mempunyai hobi yang sama iaitu gemar memandu bot laju berkuasa tinggi dan bermain perahu layar. Allah Peliharakan Sultan.

When it is time to celebrate the Sultan of Johor's birthday, various sporting events are held and often get fantastic receptions from the people. During the celebration, it is a good opportunity for the people of different races, areas and districts to get together and enjoy the sporting festivities. Among the popular spectacles are watersports.
Watersports tournaments have taken place on the Lido beach since the end of the 19th century around 1897, during the reign of Sultan Sir Ibrahim. Various boatracing categories such as Koleh boats, speedboats and sailboats have been held and competed by local and Singaporean participants. Many Johor people from various districts would come to Johor Bahru as well as some from Singapore, who would ride on special passenger boats to watch the events.
Such events have also been held during the reigns of Sultan Sir Ismail, Sultan Iskandar and HM Sultan Ibrahim, the current Sultan of Johor. Sultan Iskandar and HM Sultan Ibrahim have the same hobbies of enjoying driving speedboats and sailing sailboats. Allah Peliharakan Sultan.
