Sejarah sukan polo di negeri Johor amat luas dan ia bermula sejak tahun 1884 lagi. Gymkhana adalah istilah yang digunakan pada zaman kolonial British Anglo-India di mana ia merupakan satu acara sukan berkuda besar-besaran yang dihadiri oleh ahli bangsawan, pembesar dan aristokrat.
Pada 16 September 1892, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar menganjurkan acara tersebut di Singapura yang dihadiri oleh pelbagai kenamaan termasuk Sultan Pahang pada ketika itu. Pelbagai acara ekuestrian diadakan seperti Tandem Race, Victoria Cross Race, Tent Pegging dan Roadster Race dan festival berkenaan ditambah seri oleh muzik latar dimainkan oleh pasukan pancaragam Askar Timbalan Setia Negeri (JMF).
Sultan Sir Ibrahim seorang peminat sukan berkuda yang sangat aktif juga sering menyertai perlumbaan dan bermain polo. Baginda begitu cekap dan berani serta sering memenangi banyak pertandingan. Ketika zaman pemerintahan Sultan Sir Ibrahim, pasukan Royal Johor Polo Club secara rasmi ditubuhkan pada tahun 1920 dan pasukan Johor disertai anakanda baginda Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Tunku Temenggong Ahmad dan Tunku Aris Bendahara Abu Bakar.
Pada tahun 1925 baginda menganjurkan Royal Johor Polo Club Sky Meeting di Singapura dimana ramai orang kenamaan yang terlibat dalam sukan berkenaan telah hadir. Pada tahun 1929 baginda membina rumah kelab dinamakan “Pavillion” di dalam perkarangan Istana Pasir Pelangi. Pada tahun 1934 sebelum berangkat ke Jepun dan Amerika Syarikat, baginda memperkenankan kelab tersebut dinamakan Royal Johor International Polo Club. Allah Peliharakan Sultan.

The history of polo in Johor has been rich and started since 1884. Gymkhana was a term used during the Anglo-Indian colonial era in which it was a big horse-riding event attended by nobles, patricians and aristocrats.
On 16 September 1892, Sultan Sir Abu Bakar organised the event in Singapore, which was attended by several famous figures including the Sultan of Pahang at that time. Several equestrian events were held such as Tandem Race, Victoria Cross Race, Tent Pegging and Roadster Race, and the festival was enlivened with background music played by the Johor Military Force’s (JMF) band.
Sultan Sir Ibrahim was an active horse riding fan who often participated in horse racing and polo. His Majesty was proficient and brave and often won tournaments. During the reign of Sultan Sir Ibrahim, the Royal Johor Polo Club was officially founded in 1920 and a Johor team was joined by then Crown Prince of Johor Tunku Temenggong Ahmad and Tunku Aris Bendahara Abu Bakar.
In 1925, His Majesty organised the Royal Johor Polo Club Sky Meeting in Singapore where many VIPs involved in the sport attended. In 1929, His Majesty built a club house called the Pavillion in the Pasir Pelangi Palace compound. In 1934, before departing for Japan and the United States, His Majesty named the club the Royal Johor International Polo Club.
