Hubungan akrab Marquis Tokugawa dan Sultan Sir Ibrahim berterusan dan sering berbalas surat. Beliau amat mahir dalam bertutur dan menulis dalam bahasa Melayu dan Jawi. Marquis Tokugawa mendapat galakan dan dorongan mempelajari bahasa Melayu dan tulisan Jawi daripada baginda Sultan Sir Ibrahim sendiri.
Surat baginda kepada Marquis Tokugawa bermula dengan “Sahabat Sahaya Marquis Tokugawa”, baginda antaranya menulis “Saya berbangga melihat Marquis boleh menulis Bahasa Melayu dengan baik dan bertutur semolek orang-orang Melayu dan saya percaya Marquis mempelajari dengan sangat baik dan usaha yang bagus, oleh itu anda mampu mencapai tahap kemahiran tinggi dan memahami tentang orang Melayu. Sememangnya, anda telah mempelajari Bahasa Melayu secara tekun kerana penulisan Melayu bukan lah mudah. Ramai orang-orang putih mempelajarinya tetapi masih menulis dalam skrip Roman. Saya rasa penulisan anda akan senantiasa cantik.”
Sultan Sir Ibrahim turut ditemani oleh Marquis Tokugawa sepanjang berada di Jepun. Baginda mengadakan pertemuan dengan Maharaja Hirohito pada pagi 4 April dan menerima darjah kebesaran negara Jepun iaitu Order Of The Rising Sun kelas pertama “Grand Cordon”. Maharaja Hirohito adalah ayahanda kepada Maharaja Jepun sekarang iaitu Emperor Akihito. Pada 12 April, baginda berangkat meneruskan rangka lawatan baginda ke Amerika Syarikat. A letter written by His Majesty for Marquis Tokugawa started with "My friend Marquis Tokugawa" and His Majesty also wrote "I'm proud to see Marquis writing in Malay so eloquently and speaking just like any Malay person and I believe Marquis has learned well and with dedication, hence you could reach such a high proficiency level and understand the Malays. Truly, you have learned the Malay language well because it is not easy. Many white people have tried but they are still writing in the Roman script. I feel your writing is always beautiful."
Sultan Sir Ibrahim was also accompanied by Marquis Tokugawa while in Japan. His Majesty had a meeting with Emperor Hirohito in the morning of the 4th of April and was conferred a Japanese honourary title, the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun. Emperor Hirohito was the father of the current Emperor of Japan, Emperor Akihito. On 12th of April, His Majesty continued His Majesty's trip in the United States of America.
