Mulai tahun 1886, seorang Dato’ juga turut menerima gelaran “Yang Berhormat” yang membawa maksud ia hendaklah mempunyai dan mengamalkan taat setia yang tidak berbelah bahagi, perwatakan berhemah tinggi, jujur dan ikhlas, menghormati orang lain, bermoral, mempunyai tingkah laku yang sopan santun dan kepimpinan yang boleh dijadikan teladan.
Syarat-syarat kurniaan amat ketat bagi memartabatkan kemuliaan Darjah itu. Sejak kurniaan Dato’ diperkenalkan pada tahun 1886 sehingga ke tahun ini, kurang dari 800 orang yang telah menerima gelaran ini.

Starting in 1886, a Dato' also receives the "Yang Berhormat" prefix, indicating that he or she must possess and practice an undivided sense of loyalty, good character, honesty and sincerity, respect for others, high moral values, a polite behaviour, and leadership qualities worth following.
The conferment conditions are very strict to protect the sanctity of the title. Since the Dato' title was awarded in 1886 until today, fewer than 800 people have received the title.
